I have summarized the blog for you. Of course, you are invited to read the story and share your feedback.
Summary
The blog elaborates onto why Specialization is a long term game plan. Very briefly, it discusses why a single-product focus can be of not much financial help; read Sale numbers, in your short to medium term. I encourage you to build a typicality for your business place and then probably a community around it but gradually.
The Blog
Opening a Cafe ! I have news for you. Just a Coffee won’t do.
Why don’t you go out and have more than just a coffee serving place. Everyone does that, so what makes you different from them? Trust me, how many customers can differentiate between the coffee you serve and what’s in the neighbourhood cafe is a very debatable topic.
Most established brand names have their unique character and/or their defined customer base. Say, Barista is a workplace for professionals and same is with Third Wave, Starbucks is for people with their names on their cups, Coffee bean and tea leaf is for deal makers and professionals, and then most are to meet a friend or two and pass on the time.
And if you are looking to establish a brand, I am glad for you and wish you luck. But do keep in mind that establishing a brand identity needs considerable time and focused continuous efforts towards a specified non-deviating goal. It is not that you cannot do it, in fact you must but it’s a game of perseverance.
Open a space with an interesting touch; like some are and many are coming up. There’s this Pet friendly cafe’, Philosophy community based cafe’, Book club, Kids psychology cafe, Hobby based cafe’ and some more very interesting ideas; and then build a community around it - your own tribe, loyal to your brand. That is far more advantageous in the medium to long term.
Your standing out from the crowd would help you to focus better on connecting with your customers via social media and offline connects via a more effective way. You would be able to hold functions and events with a specific goal in mind and generate continuous revenue. You would also have an advantage over the pricing, for you can price it any which way rather than look at what your neighbour is charging, if you are just a part of the crowd.
I understand it is not that easy to build more than a coffee serving place but if you do and manage it well, one day you would appreciate that you did.
